How to compress an image
- Choose a photo. It is compressed immediately with the default settings.
- Move the quality slider. The preview and the sizes update as you go.
- Optionally enter a maximum width. Larger images are scaled down proportionally, which saves the most space.
- When the size and the preview look right, press Download compressed image.
How much can I save?
Photos straight from a phone camera are often 3–8 MB. At 70–80% quality and a maximum width of 1920 pixels, the same photo is typically a few hundred kilobytes and still looks sharp on any screen. Images that are already heavily compressed shrink less. If the result is not smaller than the original, the tool tells you, so you never end up with a worse file.
Quality settings in practice
- 85–95% — practically indistinguishable from the original. Good for printing and portfolios.
- 65–80% — the sweet spot for websites, email and messengers.
- 40–60% — very small files for previews or strict upload limits. Slight blurring becomes visible in fine detail.
JPG or WebP?
JPG opens everywhere: in every browser, phone, email program and office application. WebP usually produces 25–35% smaller files at the same visual quality and supports transparency, and all modern browsers display it, but some older programs and upload forms do not accept it. If you are unsure, choose JPG. Transparent areas of PNG images become white in JPG.
Your privacy, including metadata
Photos often contain hidden EXIF metadata: the camera or phone model, the date and time, and sometimes the exact GPS location where the picture was taken. Because this tool redraws the image before saving it, the compressed file contains none of that information. And as with every Orbit Tools utility, the photo is processed on your device and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress PNG files?
You can open PNG, GIF, BMP and other formats your browser supports, and save them as JPG or WebP. For screenshots with text, choose a high quality setting to keep letters crisp.
How do I get a photo under a specific size, such as 200 KB?
Set a maximum width (for example 1600 or 1200 pixels) and lower the quality step by step until the “Compressed” size is below your limit.
Is there a size limit?
Images up to 60 MB and 50 megapixels can be processed.
