Audio converter

How to convert an audio file

  1. Click Choose an audio file and select the recording you want to convert.
  2. Under Convert to choose MP3 for small files that play everywhere, or WAV for uncompressed audio.
  3. For MP3, choose the quality (bitrate). Optionally change the channels to mono or pick another sample rate.
  4. Press Convert audio, listen to the preview and press Download.

Which conversions are supported?

You can open MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC files, as far as your browser can play them, and save them as MP3 or WAV. That covers the most common jobs:

MP3 or WAV?

MP3 is a compressed format. At 128 kbps one minute of music takes about 1 MB, and at 320 kbps about 2.4 MB. It plays on every device. WAV stores the sound uncompressed (16-bit PCM), so one minute of stereo audio takes about 10 MB, but nothing is lost after the conversion. Use WAV when you want to edit or process the audio further, and MP3 when you want to listen to it or send it to someone.

Keep in mind

Converting from a lossy format such as MP3, M4A or OGG to WAV does not bring back detail that was already removed; the file just becomes larger. Converting lossy to lossy, for example M4A to MP3, loses a little more quality, so choose a generous bitrate such as 192 kbps or more. Text tags and cover art are not copied into the new file.

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your browser decodes the recording, and an open-source MP3 encoder (LAME, compiled to JavaScript) or a built-in WAV writer creates the new file. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so you can safely convert private recordings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert to M4A, OGG, FLAC or AAC?

Not at the moment. This tool creates MP3 and WAV files, the two formats that work everywhere. If you need another output format, tell us on the contact page.

Why does my file not open?

Your browser decides which formats it can decode. MP3, WAV and M4A/AAC work everywhere, while OGG, Opus and FLAC depend on the browser version. Video files and files protected by copy protection cannot be opened.

Is there a size limit?

Files up to 60 MB and about one hour of audio can be processed. A WAV result is limited to about 400 MB; for longer recordings choose MP3, mono or a lower sample rate.

Does the sample rate change?

Audio is processed at 44.1 kHz by default, the CD standard. You can choose 48 kHz, which is common for video, or a lower rate for speech.
